Issue with Text-To-Speech

Since last update, TTS is silent.... When I look at Text to Speech Engine and click Text to Speech, it doesn't open the TextToSpeech control panel applet  anymore but the SpeechToText. My OS is Windows 11. And I can't access the Text to Speech control panel anymore.
Any idea? How Can I investigate this issue?

  • Are you running an insider build or something?  Windows 11 24H2 still works normally.

  • Thank you, I would love to have this panel again. But it seems that the last Windows update removes it. I can't access to it anymore. In the panel you show above, there is only now the Speech recognition tab.

Classic Windows SAPI seems to be removed (windows speech API)
  • Again...  are you using an insider build?  This is NOT the case with release versions of Windows 11 24H2.  Where are your speculations coming from?
  • Thank you for your message. It is definitly a Windows issue, so I will investigate my build.
  • If you used something weird like tiny11, that could be the cause.

People talk about deprecations in Windows for years before they happen and I've never heard of this.
  • I don't use tiny11. But sadly, this function may be removed for. I had to reinstall a Microsotf Speeh SDK 5.1.
    It fixed my issue.
Thank you so much for this discussion.
  • I randomly also encounted this. I cant seem to be able to bring up the old text to speech window (It's gone somehow?). And as Leno said clicking on the link inside ACT opens speech recognition instead of the old text to speech window that did before.

You said this fixes your problem. I installed the SDK, but it's still not really working. Did you do something else aside installing the SDK?
  • hey, sorry to necro this thread but if someone have an issue and google bring you here you might want to try install the voice adapter.

search NaturalVoiceSAPIAdapter and follow the github instruction.

As far as I understand the window 11 new voice engine change and ACT use the SAPI as a voice api.

My problem is that I change the TTS voice in my machine to natural voice and it wasn't compatible with SAPI.

    Hope this help someone.
  • I would like to review this post as it is relevant to my issue also. I moved eq2 from my win10 pc to my win11 pc, and TTS has stopped. The sounds are still there, the beeps. I can see activity in windows sound settings, but no tts is heard. I have sound on all my games, system, discord, headset.

If the beeps work, does tts in act work differently? As in, goes thru different methods to get to the speakers? I find it odd that I can see my speaker output moving but no sound comes out.

    Win11 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 26100)

I looked at the posts so far, not sure which speech pack PoorLeno used, not really sure that NaturalVoices is anything I would need.

    Thx
  • The beep or asterisk sounds are not handled by ACT.  They are considered system sounds and changing ACT's volume does not change them.
  • Gotcha, can you think of anything I can do to figure out what the issue is? All I did was install act. But I did copy the trigger file over, is it possible I need to reinstall and hand copy the triggers in? Disappointing that the text to speech is not working now, very odd
  • I can only suggest that you look around the Options, make sure the volume sliders are not low... test different TTS methods, check the control panel applet...

  • I am really curious if the Soundblaster card I have in this pc is blocking the audio from Text to Speech somehow. I see the sound bar moving around when I test sounds from ACT but no sound. I can also see that the onboard audio is probably disabled in bios. I have a feeling that it's all on the Soundblaster. I may have to try removing it and resetting audio in bios.
  • Maybe you told Windows to send audio output to a random output device that you don't use.  I have a monitor with no speakers that likes to steal audio output just because nvidia gives it an audio driver through DisplayPort.
  • So the answer was a lot deeper then this. A quick search said that a Soundblaster can indeed mess with Text to Speech. So I opened the sb app and it said no device found, even tho windoze clearly shows the device is in, working and produces sound at the sb output. I clicked check for updates, the app updated and suddenly it found the sb, turned on various things and now ACT works the way it always has.

So just in case someone ever comes here to ask similar, if they use ACT, win11 and have a Soundblaster with no text to speech, here is your answer. Thanks for all your help, I eventually found the answer.
